6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route

The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” is Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular trail. It offers diverse landscapes — from lush rainforests to alpine deserts and icy glaciers — and provides good acclimatization for climbers. This 6-day trek is perfect for adventurous hikers ready for a rewarding challenge and breathtaking views all the way to Uhuru Peak.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (2,835m)

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Trek through the rainforest, where colobus monkeys leap between mossy trees. Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,750m)

Continue through moorland, leaving the forest behind. The trail climbs steeply but rewards with panoramic views of Shira Plateau. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,600m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to the beautiful Barranco Valley. The “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to altitude. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall — an exciting scramble with incredible views. Continue through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp for rest and dinner.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Today’s trek is short but steep, leading to your base camp for the summit. Rest early and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 4 km | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Start your climb around midnight. Reach Stella Point by dawn, then push to Uhuru Peak — Africa’s highest summit! Take photos, then descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Hiking time: 10–13 hours | Distance: 17 km | Habitat: Arctic summit zone

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi/Arusha (departure)

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate and celebrate your success. Transfer back to your hotel.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 10 km
