6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Rongai Route

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, and offers a peaceful, less-crowded climb. It’s ideal for trekkers who prefer a quiet trail, steady ascent, and beautiful wilderness scenery. With clear skies and a gradual slope, it’s one of the easiest routes for reaching the summit — a great choice for first-time climbers.

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,650m)

After breakfast, drive to the Rongai Gate for registration. Begin trekking through pine forest and rural farmland before reaching Simba Camp near the edge of the moorland zone.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Forest

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave (3,450m)

Climb steadily through moorland with sweeping views of Kibo and the plains below. Stop at Second Cave for lunch and overnight.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 9 km | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Continue ascending toward the alpine zone, with striking views of Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp for dinner and overnight.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 8 km | Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m)

A short but steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most beautiful campsites on Kilimanjaro, nestled beneath Mawenzi’s jagged spires. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and relaxing.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 6 km | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Trek across the alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is exposed and dramatic, leading to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. Rest early.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 9 km | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin your summit push just after midnight. Reach Gillman’s Point for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa! After celebrating, descend via the Marangu Route to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Hiking time: 12–14 hours | Distance: 20 km | Habitat: Arctic summit zone

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha/Moshi

Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel.
